Dempsey injures knee in Premier League match: UPDATE

Clint Dempsey, a forward for the US Soccer team injured his knee Sunday in London, England while playing for Premier League team Fulham.

Initial diagnosis is a tear of the posterior cruciate ligament and lengthy stay on the injury list. Dempsey is one of the US's most potent strikers and will be yet another big name to likely sit out the World Cup in South Africa.

Oguchi Onyewu (knee) and Charlie Davies (car accident) will also likely sit out South African action.

UPDATE:

Fulham FC is reporting that Dempsey will not need surgery to repair his injured knee.

"Early indications are positive in that no operation is required," said a statement from Fulham.

"The news about Clint's injury is positive, especially given the fact that he will not require surgery," U.S. coach Bob Bradley said. "We are confident that Clint will be ready to be an important part of our team during the World Cup."
